San Francisco!

David, Jennifer, and I are in San Francisco for the Web 2.0 Expo. We arrived Friday night, did some sight seeing on Saturday, then started in on the conference on Sunday. I wrote this Sunday night before going to bed:

When we woke up this morning, it was raining. We got some coffee and bagels at a Palo Alto coffee shop and watched the rain for a bit.

This is funny. I ordered a bagel and a large coffee. The guy at the cash register told me the total and I pulled out my credit card. “We take cash only.” “really.” “yep.” This is a most interesting situation. I don’t think I’ve ever bought something and then found myself without the means to pay for it. Fortunately, Jennifer had cash.

It was still raining when we finished breakfast, so we decided that doing something where we could duck inside if we needed to was a good idea.

The first thing we did was go to the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford to see an exhibit of Richard Avedon’s portraits called “In the American West”. Here are some of the pictures we saw:

It was fascinating and tiring to see dozens of people from the American West who where “just getting by” in life: drifters, coal miners, oil field workers, waitresses… I think I saw the corners of one guy’s mouth turned up, just a little.

It’s also important to know that all of these portraits were bigger than life sized. If you stood close, you could see pores.

Then we went to San Francisco. We drove around a bit, went up to that one place, did that one thing. Walked around a bit, saw some stuff.

It must be time for bed.

In any case, it was lots of fun, we took lots of pictures, and we can reconstruct the details when I’m more awake.

Pictures of the trip are uploaded nightly on Jennifer’s Flickr account.

If you get a chance on your way back to the airport, drive through Golden Gate Park at Arguello, then up to 1960- 10th Ave, the historic site of the West Coast Revolution, aka Koller household in the 1970’s. If nothing else, there’s a great view from the top of the hill, and you can coast downhill from there to the airport. Hope you are enjoying The City.

Also, if you have any down time and want to do something fun, head up Turk St to the University of San Francisco. At the corner of Fulton and Parker, on one side is St. Ignatius Church, a great example of Jesuit Baroque architecture. On the other side is a real gem: a small pink Mexican chapel. Go inside. It’s an ocean of peace in the midst of the city.
